Welcome to the Web Site of the Sportfishing Club of the British Isles.
Perhaps the Club’s title is somewhat of a misnomer? Although the bulk of the Club’s membership are from the UK we also have members from other European countries – Belgium, Eire, Germany and Holland; and further afield from the ‘States and Kenya.
So where individuals live is certainly no bar to membership of the Club!
I suppose in the ‘connected world’ of the World Wide Web some may argue that the whole purpose of Clubs is becoming less and less relevant. After all just access a forum and ask a question, you will get back a host of replies. But are they necessarily all relevant? And is the response always impartial?
I guess fundamental of all though you can’t go fishing on the Internet!
So, our particular Club? It’s relatively small, currently just around 100 members. But where have those members fished? Well literally from as far north as Lapland and Alaska down to Patagonia (on the tip of South America) and the Falklands. And all around the world in virtually every country that produces gamefish – fresh or saltwater.
The membership collectively has been extremely successful with their captures. And by way of example we have established over 70 IGFA World records in all lines strengths from 2 to 130lb class, plus a number of All Tackle and Fly Fishing records and also some from Freshwater. Additionally our members have caught Blue Marlin, both Atlantic and Pacifics, and Black Marlin to over 1000lbs in weight, and Sharks to over 2000lbs. We also have two members that have caught ten billfish species each.
So there’s a wealth of knowledge that the membership has – unbiased views on captains, places to visit – and importantly when there – tackle and techniques. And that’s accessible electronically, through the private forums we have on this web site, or the Club Officers can put you in touch with individuals. Often by talking directly to someone you can gain more comprehensive information.
As well within our private forums there’s a section that enables Club members to identify trips that they organising, where they’re looking for others to join them – to share the costs (and the craic). The Club also, based on levels of interest, will organise trips for the membership or participation at international tournaments. Then, in the UK, we organise gatherings – some are at fishing venues, others purely social.
Of course what I mustn’t forget to mention is the Club Year Book – something, which over the years, has developed into a 160 paged, full colour publication. Some even say that with its range of informative articles it alone is worth the membership fee.
So if membership of the Club sounds of interest please contact us through this link.
If not just look through the site, I am sure you will find something of interest and, bear in mind, it’s regularly being updated so put it in your list of favourites and come back.
