Namibia

15 years since independence, this country is one of the most stable in Africa.  And has a strong developing tourist industry, which is mostly based on its huge areas of unspoilt Africa.  However, there is a huge resource of untapped fishing to be explored.

The primary fishing in Namibia, is where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean – the beach, all 1500 miles of it.

The main target species for tourist anglers to the coast is the Copper Shark, growing up to 200kg, and caught usually from the beach with surf casters.  There are growing numbers of boats coming available fishing not only for these sharks, but also Yellowtail and Snoek in the summer months.  Most beach fishing is accessed through professional guides with 4x4 vehicles, and daily trips from one of three main coastal towns.

The waters off the Namibian coast are primarily under the cold influence of the Benguella Current, and it is this Antarctic current that brings the very rich plankton and krill that sustains the whole fishery structure.  Other inshore species that are available seasonally are Kob, Garrick and Bluefish.

For the freshwater and fly angler there are the Chobe and Zambezi rivers with a fine head of Tigerfish (to 10kg), as well as host of other riverine species.  Many lodges offer fully guided services for fishing, and it is as well to avail yourself of these, as the attendant problem of fishing in waters with Crocodiles and Hippos is obvious, even when fishing from the bank.
Guided trips to Namibia for fishing or safaris can be arranged through Excalibur Tackle in Walvis Bay, Namibia.   Their web site can be accessed by clicking here.
